Independence Young Matrons

Who we are

Independence Young Matrons (IYM) was organized in 1940 to combine home interest and involvement in the civic and cultural life of the city.

One of the earliest projects was to establish the “Gray Ladies” program at Independence Sanitarium.

in 1942, IYM made funds available to establish and equip the first Kindergarten in Independence.

Children’s Theatre was formed in 1956 to provide a live theatre experience annually to elementary students in the Independence School District.

IYM started the first library in Independence. It continues today as part of the Mid-Continent Public Library.

The Holly and Mistletoe Tour was first held in 1959 to raise funds for grants to local nonprofit organizations. IYM has given over $870,000 in community grants made possible through the success of the annual Holly and Mistletoe Homes Tour.

In celebration of 85 years of service in 2025-2026, IYM hosted a number of special events. The Fall Coffee featured a proclamation by our special guest, Independence Mayor Rory Rowland. Members and guests enjoyed live music, food and fun. The September board meeting honored current IYM members who were born in the same decade as IYM was formed. Champagne Christmas, an elegant party held in a lovely lakeside home, provided funds for additional community grants. It was a special evening for members and new friends. To close out the anniversary year, the IYM Hospitality committee hosted a Tea Party and Fashion Show. “Fashion through the Decades”, was a fitting tribute to 85 years of service and lots of fun.

It was a memorable year!

Children’s Theatre

The 2026 production, “When I Grow Up”, commissioned by IYM, written and directed by Ray Ettinger, delighted our audiences. The play was performed for Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students in the Independence School District. Over 2,000 students and guests attended the play performances.
Original plays and productions have been IYM’s gift to the community since 1956.  Director Ray Ettinger has written and directed the 14 previous Young Matron plays.
